Two charged with murder of Wombwell pensioner

A MAN and a woman have been charged with the murder of a Wombwell pensioner.

South Yorkshire Police this morning charged a man and a woman with the murder of John Gogarty, whose body was found at a house on Marsh Street, Wombwell, on Friday 17 July.

Helen Nichols, 38, and Ian Birley, 43, both of Mont Walk, were arrested on Thursday from a property in the Wombwell area of Barnsley at around 10am.

They have been remanded into custody and will appear at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning (Monday).

South Yorkshire Police previously revealed Mr Gogarty, 65, died of multiple stab wounds.

A 48-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday, 21 July, remains on police bail.
