University releases poems to mark 50th

Poets at Leeds Trinity University have published an anthology to commemorate the institution's 50th anniversary.

Staff, students and alumni at the Horsforth site wrote Inspiring Futures, a collection of verse about hopes for the years ahead.

A book launch was held at the Brownberrie Lane university’s atrium yesterday.

Professor Paul Hardwick, programme leader for Creative Writing and the book’s editor, said: “When I put out the call for contributions, I left it up to individuals to interpret what ‘inspiring futures’ actually meant to them, and to respond in their own way.

“As a result, we have an eclectic mix of poems covering desire, defiance, and a small touch of despair, which really showcase the creativity of our writers at Leeds Trinity.”

Vice-chancellor, Professor Margaret A House, said: “In 1970, a group of students started the TASC poetry society and published an anthology with contributions from students across the country.

“As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary and launch our Inspiring Futures anthology, it fills me with pride that we continue to be at the forefront for creative writing.”

She said that this included the university’s reputation for producing some of the most “highly-rated graduates” and its “incredible” links with publishers, poets and authors across the UK.”

Leeds Trinity University was founded in 1966 as two Catholic teacher training colleges.

It later moved into offering a range of higher education courses.

More than 3,500 now study at the institution.

The anthology can be bought for £7.99 through Indigo Dreams Publishing.
