THE latest addition to join a Hull towage fleet was being named today.
A bottle of champagne will be smashed across the bows of the Turkish-built tug Statesman by Mary Roach, who has travelled from Texas for the occasion.
The A-class tug, costing almost £4m, is the 11th in a fleet – all of which have “man” suffixes – which assist large vessels into the ports on the Humber, and could be used in the burgeoning offshore wind sector.
Managing director of SMS Towage Paul Escreet said business had thrived despite the downturn. He added: “I am very confident about the future. If everything happens relative to the wind farm business, this vessel will certainly be used in assisting the crane barges coming into the Humber to facilitate the construction operations that could be going on offshore.”
