NOW there is no excuse not to buy the Military Wives’ Christmas single after the Government showed that it had a heart and waived VAT from sales of Wherever You Are.
It’s likely George Osborne and Philip Hammond did so because they do not want to be compared unfavourably to Scrooge, with all proceeds now going to military charities.
But there is a serious point to be made. This amazing choir, made up of the wives and girlfriends of soldiers serving in Afghanistan, highlights the sacrifices that the Armed Forces, and their families, make throughout the year.
And the singers, inspired by the military choir that was set up at Catterick Garrison last year, are demonstrating – in an entertaining manner – the continuing debt of honour that this country owes to its Armed Forces, and even more so at Christmas.
Having made a one-off gesture to help sales of the single, the onus is on Ministers and the Treasury to ensure that this Government’s comment to the military, and their families, is absolute, and that no promise by Ministers is left unfulfilled.
