PEOPLE from Scarborough are being asked to come forward with information about the town’s former mayor after police revealed he would be interviewed under caution over alleged child sex offences if he were still alive.

North Yorkshire Police wants to hear from victims of the late Peter Jaconelli, a prominent local businessman and former Mayor of Scarborough, as part of an “ongoing investigation into historic sexual abuse”.

The force says recent publicity has identified a number of people who say they were victims of Mr Jaconelli, who died in 1999 aged 73, when they were younger and that it is now keen to “identify possible other victims”.

A spokesman said: “Anyone who believes they have been a victim of Peter Jaconelli, or has relevant information and who has not recently contacted North Yorkshire Police, are asked to do so as soon as possible. It is important that victims are able to access the specialist support services that are readily available, and that we gather all the evidence in respect of this matter. “

Police said last week a file would have been handed over to prosecutors about the ice cream entrepreneur and friend of disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile because of evidence detectives received from several witnesses.

Scarborough Council leader Tom Fox has since said that he was speaking to councillors in a bid to arrange a vote on whether Mr Jaconelli should be stripped of his civic honours.

North Yorkshire Police also said last week that it had referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission over the way it recorded and responded to child sex abuse allegations made about Savile and Jaconelli.

Anyone with information is urged to call North Yorkshire Police 101, select option 1, and pass details to the Force Control Room quoting “Operation Hibiscus”, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
