Shopping trolleys and garden sheds are not usually built for speed.

However both were taking part in a speed event at Elvington Airfield, near York, this weekend, where there was a series of unusual world records broken.

Tom Armitage, from Leeds, set a world record in his “Postman Pat” van which reached speeds of 107.4 mph.Other records included Kevin Nicks and his motorised shed which reached a speed of more than 88mph.

Kevin Scott, from Lincoln, and his monowheel ‘Warhorse’ set a world record speed of 61.18mph while Matt McKeown on his jet powered shopping trolley set an unofficial world record of 61.18mph. The shopping trolley has been adapted and is jet-powered while the motorised garden shed, is a two ton, steel frame construction, with a four-wheel drive Volkswagen Passat inside, and took seven months to build. Others taking part in the Straightliners automotive event on Saturday and yesterday included a jet car and World wheelie champion Gary Rothwell who also broke a world record. Trevor Duckworth, from Brighouse, of Straightliners said: “The main international automotive speed event at Bonneville in Utah this year has been called off due to surface problems.

“As a result the Straightliners meet is the main speed event for UK participants is the last major event for 2015.”To establish a record participants had to complete a run in both direction records meeting over a kilometre or a quarter mile. Organisers said records were thought to have been broken and they were being verified yesterday.
