The storms that have lashed the south of the country in recent days were set to spread to Yorkshire today, with gales of up to 70mph set to hit the region.
The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for parts of Yorkshire which indicate “severe or hazardous weather” with potential to “cause danger to life or widespread disruption”.
In a statement it said: “Widespread gales are likely to develop across the area and last much of Friday. The worst of the winds are likely to transfer across much of northern England during the day on Friday bringing gusts of 60 to 70 mph widely.”
John Griffiths, a forecaster for MeteoGroup UK, said: “There will be some very, very strong winds and blustery showers.”
