The call comes as councils across the county pay their respects to those killed. Flags are flying half mast at civic buildings in Leeds and Wakefield and across Yorkshire today.

Bradford Council chief executive Kersten England and leader Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, said in a joint statement: “We are shocked by this appalling incident and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the people who died and with those who were injured and their families particular PC Keith Palmer who died while trying to save the lives of others.

"We must also pay tribute to all the emergency services who work tirelessly to protect us all.

“Communities across the country will be shocked and unsettled by this terror attack at the heart of our democracy in London. It is a time for communities to pull together and be vigilant and for everyone to support their friends, families and neighbours.”

The flags at all Wakefield district’s public buildings are flying at half-mast. Earlier today, council staff and elected members joined together for a minute’s silence to show their respect for those involved.

Wakefield Council leader Coun Peter Box CBE, said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the innocent victims who lost their lives or were affected by the attack yesterday.

“It appears that yet again we find ourselves faced with a terror situation that will have irrevocably changed the lives of so many. At times like this our strength comes from standing together and focussing on the acts of kindness, heroism and selflessness demonstrated by people yesterday, in response to this act of evil.

“On behalf of the people of this district I send our deepest sympathy and unwavering support to the people of London and all those lives whose have been touched by this terrible attack.”
