Mr Paterson was found deceased at Sowerby House care home in Thirsk, on Wednesday. No cause of death has been given yet.

Police have not confirmed the relationship between Davidson and Mr Paterson, only saying the defendant is an “associate” of the deceased.

Davidson, dressed in a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants, only spoke to confirm her name and address at the short hearing today.

She will next appear at Teeside Crown Court on 17 February.

Mark Robson, leader of Hambleton District Council, who lives 50 yards from the care home, said: “We have not experienced this sort of thing before and hopefully we won’t again.

“Our concerns have to be with his family but also our thoughts are with the staff and residents who must be going through an awful time.”

A spokeswoman for Orchard Care Homes said: “We can confirm that there was a death at the home on the afternoon of February 11, 2015.

“This is a police matter and we are co-operating fully with the police investigation.”
