ONE SHOULD never speak ill of the dead, but when it comes to their surroundings, sometimes it is all that will do.

The public body that will be in charge of the at-risk register, provide expert advice to councils and developers, champion England’s heritage, ensure historic places are protected will be known as Historic England.

Retaining the name English Heritage will be a new, independent charity that will look after the National Heritage Collection of more than 400 historic sites and monuments across England.

One of the new charity’s first projects is an overhaul of facilities at Rievaulx Abbey in Helmsley.
