Yorkshire ready for record staycations

Families taking so-called ‘staycations’ this weekend are expected to generate around £1.25bn for the UK economy, according to VisitEngland.

Sir Gary said: “We’re delighted to see that record numbers are expected to holiday at home this bank holiday weekend and there’s nowhere better than Yorkshire.

“We’ve got Scarborough which is the second most visited holiday destination outside of London, we’ve got national award winning attractions from Flamingo Land to Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery and National Railway Museum in York to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

“It’s no wonder domestic overnight trips to Yorkshire grew by 20 per cent in 2015 – one of the largest increases in England.”

The VisitEngland survey suggests 3.6m people are waiting to see whether they take a holiday over the weekend with many wanting to wait to the last minute or deciding on the basis of the weather.

Figures from earlier this year suggest 2016 will see new records for UK ‘staycations’.

The number of domestic holidays in the first four months of the year rose by eight per cent compared to the same period in 2015.

VisitEngland director Patricia Yates said: “Record numbers of Brits have been taking holidays at home this year and with so much going on this summer the August Bank Holiday weekend is another chance to enjoy a great holiday whether on a seaside, countryside or city break.”
