RADIO presenter John Uphoff, who worked on three commercial stations in Yorkshire, has died at the age of 46.
Mr Uphoff was born in Bradford in September 1961 and developed an interest in radio at an early age, studying electronics at college.
Spells in student and later hospital radio led him, in 1988, to decide to leave his then full-time job in retail
ing to pursue his dream.
His early career saw him work for Pennine Radio and The Pulse in West Yorkshire and he was a member of the launch team for the Viking Gold station in Hull.
Mr Uphoff moved to Jersey in 1991 to Eclipse FM, a new station broadcasting to Europe from the island.
He went on to join the island's Channel 103FM as head of music and senior presenter before moving to his final job at BBC Radio Jersey in 2002.
For the past year he had presented the station's breakfast programme, attracting a weekly audience of 25,000 people.
Paying tribute to Mr Uphoff, Denzil Dudley, the editor of BBC Jersey, said: "He had that rarest of talents – being able to say what you were thinking and to hold up a mirror to the more ridiculous aspects of life and society.
"John was modest and self-deprecating. He always insisted that success was a team effort and that his was mainly due to his producers.
"He loved to describe himself as 'just a gob on a stick'.
"He was, of course, much, much more than that.
"He was, simply, one of the most talented, committed and professional broadcasters it
has been my privilege to work with."
Mr Uphoff became ill in early July. He was diagnosed with a serious viral infection and was in a coma for three weeks before his death on Wednesday.
He leaves his wife, Jan.
The funeral will be in Jersey next Friday.
