Peter Tasker: a Leeds-born surgeon
PETER Tasker, a Leeds-born surgeon who was honoured for his war service and would later earn national recognition in Canada, has died, aged 91.
Mr Tasker was the first son of Mabel and Bertrand Tasker and his godfather was the 1st Lord Moynihan.
He graduated from Leeds University in 1940 and enrolled with the Army, serving with a field ambulance unit before joining the 1st Special Service Brigade, No 6 Commando in 1941.
Service in North Africa and participation in the Normandy landings saw him decorated with the British Military Cross.
During the war Mr Tasker saved the life of Lord Lovatt, who would later thank him when he featured on the television programme This Is Your Life.
At the end of the war Mr Tasker returned to Leeds University, where he trained as a surgeon before emigrating to Canada in 1951.
His work there earned him the Queen's Jubilee Medal, recognising him as an outstanding Canadian.
In addition to his work, Mr Tasker was a committed naturalist and had also recently published a book of poetry.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his two daughters, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
