Bridlington sea search called off after five seen at high tide

Police and the coastguard have called off a search for five people reported as missing from a beach as the tide came in.

The precautionary search was launched at around 4.35pm yesterday when a woman in wet clothing said she saw two adults and three children as she struggled to get off the beach in Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Humberside Police said the woman did not stay at the scene and the force had not received any reports of missing people in the area.

A spokesman said the woman approached another woman in the North Pier area of Harbour Road and said she was going to get help.

When she did not return, the second woman raised the alarm.

The spokesman said: “It is not known if the other five people she mentioned had already returned to shore. However, the force has not received any reports of people missing in the area.”

A spokeswoman for the Coastguard said: “At 4.20pm, Humber Coastguard was alerted to a report from a member of the public stating that five people were in the water at Bridlington North Beach.

“A search was launched involving Bridlington RNLI lifeboats, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team, Police and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter but nothing has been found.

“The first informant did not remain at the scene.”

Police appealed for the woman in wet clothes, who is believed to have been wearing a grey cardigan and brown boots, or anyone with information about the five people, to contact them on 101 quoting log 406 of April 12.
