Driver arrested for drink-drug driving as pensioner dies in Mexborough collision

A collision between three cars in Mexborough has resulted in the death of a 72-year-old man.

The incident occurred this morning at around 10.20am on the A6023 Doncaster Road when a black-coloured Audi A4 travelling in the direction of Denaby Main collided with a white Vauxhall Corsa and a green coloured Toyota Corolla which were travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver and only occupant of the Corolla, a 72-year-old man from Conisbrough, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The only occupant of the Corsa, a 41-year-old man from Mexbrough, suffered slight injuries.

Three male occupants from the Audi all sustained injuries. A 34-year-old passenger suffered serious spinal injuries and was taken to the Northern General Hospital. The driver, 31, suffered abdominal injuries and was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and another passenger, 18, was also injured.

The driver of the Audi has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen and driving while unfit through drink and drugs.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner of driving of any vehicle prior to the collision, is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 351 of the 21 February.
