NEIGHBOURS helped the occupier of a flat escape through a window after a fire broke out inside the property in the early hours of the morning.

The fire service was alerted to the incident in Waterton Grove, Wakefield at 3.55am today, with crews of firefighters sent to the scene from Wakefield and Ossett fire stations.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a single hose to extinguish the fire.

The occupier was taken to hospital by ambulance, suffering from smoke inhalation and lacerations.
