100 people collapse at gala

A stage put up tor a boxing tournament In Victoria Park, Keighley, collapsed on Saturday after about 100 people had climbed on to It to watch a fireworks display. No one was seriously hurt, but a number of adults and children were treated for minor cuts, bruises and shock and the boxing ring was badly damaged.

The fireworks ended the programme of field events organised by Keighley Friendly Societies’ Gala Committee in connection with their 77th annual fete and gala.

Thousands of people had lined the procession route from Lund Park through the streets to Victoria Park in the afternoon and later visited Victoria Park for a varied programme including the amateur boxing tournament, ambulance and nursing competitions, gymnastic displays, a band concert and a fun fair.
