MINERS were warned that a vote for Arthur Scargill in the NUM’s presidential election would help keep Margaret Thatcher in Downing Street.

Mr Scargill’s election opponent John Walsh, the North Yorkshire miners’ agent, said that if Mr Scargill remained as NUM president it would blight Neil Kinnock’s prospects of becoming Prime Minister.

“British Coal wants Mr Scargill elected so they can continue to sweetheart the UDM and impose second-rate pay deals on the NUM through his continuing inability to enter sensible negotiations,” he warned.
