IF you were to believe the reviews on his books, you could be forgiven for thinking GP Taylor is still a best-selling author in waiting. But you'd be wrong.
Far from being the "next JK Rowling" or even the "new CS Lewis", the former vicar has already seen success many novelists only dream of. And his eagerly awaited new novel Mariah Mundi is likely to add quite a few more readers to his legion of fans, young and old, the world over.

Introducing the slightly gawky Mariah Mundi, this book, the first in a seven book series, tells the story of the teenager as he begins his new life as a magician's assistant at the labyrinthine Prince Regent Hotel in Victorian Scarborough.

But in a town where no one is quite as they seem, he finds himself drawn into the intrigue of others and he must ultimately defend himself and his friends from mythical monsters and unseen foe.

In this OutLoud interview, Taylor reveals the secrets behind the supernatural suspense of Mariah Mundi, why the book is set in Scarborough and why he wants to rewrite his best-selling book Wormwood.

Formerly vicar at Cloughton, near Whitby, Taylor now writes full-time from his home in Scarborough. Married with three children, he met his wife while working at a day care centre in his early 20s after his return north from London where he worked in the record industry. Prior to his ordination he was a policeman in Yorkshire.

Taylor hit the big time with his astonishing debut Shadowmancer in 2003. Written from scratch in about eight months, it initially received the brush off from publishers so he decided to go it alone and sold his motorbike to self-publish the book. It was later bought up by Faber and republished.

Standalone novels Wormwood and Tersias followed in 2004, and 2005, with the sequel to Shadowmancer, The Curse of Salamander Street, published in 2006. Last year also saw the publication of the first of a series, The Tizzle Sisters and Erik, an "illustronovella" designed with comic strips, pictures and text to encourage younger readers.

Mariah Mundi, £9.99, will be published by faber and faber on September 10, ISBN: 978057122650-4.
