Patrick Mower is the archetypal TV tough guy of the seventies and eighties. But his life began in far less glamorous circumstances.
Born in 1940 to a Welsh father and an English mother, he discovered years later that his father was a bigmaist with three other children of whom he knew nothing.
He recounts the story in his autobiography, published by John Blake, and in this OutLoud audio programme from the Yorkshire Post, he talks about his early years and reads a passage from the book.

After first training as an engineering draughtsman at the BMC Cowley car plant, Patrick Mower graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and first came to prominence in the TV detective series Callan, starring Edward Woodward.
He went on to appear as Tom Haggerty in Special Branch, and as detective Steve Hackett in his own BBC police series Target. He was also in one of the last Carry On films, Carry on England.
He has enjoyed a colourful off-screen life and in his tough-guy heyday was rarely out of the tabloids on the arm of his then girlfriend, actress Suzanne Danielle.
Since 2000 he has played Rodney Blackstock in the Yorkshire soap Emmerdale.
