WHEN it comes to adding a chill to a thriller, you could be in no safer hands than those of Tess Gerritsen. After all, she is a doctor.
Having cut her teeth writing romantic suspense, Gerritsen hit the big time when she ventured into more familiar territory with her first medical thriller Harvest.

She ramped up the thrills even higher in The Surgeon, featuring serial killer Warren Hoyt, in 2001, and has never looked back.

In this OutLoud interview, part of a series recorded at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, Gerritsen discusses her female leads, Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli, the reaction when she left medicine to write full-time, and gives a reading from her new book, The Bone Garden.

Gerritsen is a graduate of Stanford University and was awarded her M.D at the University of California, in San Francisco. She began to write fiction while on maternity leave.

She published her first novel, Call After Midnight in 1987. Eight more romantic thrillers followed, until she hit the bestseller list in 1996 with Harvest, her first medical thriller.

In total she has published 20 novels, which have sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The Bone Garden is her latest bestseller.

Gerritsen now lives in Maine with her family and writes full-time. In her spare time she loves gardening, is learning about archaeology, and loves playing the fiddle.

The Bone Garden, £6.99, is out in paperback by Bantam Press, ISBN: 9780553818352.
