Fay Weldon was born in 1931. Her father was a doctor and her mother a writer of commercial fiction under the pen name Pearl Bellairs.
Briefly married in her early twenties to a man more than 20 years her senior, she worked on the problem page of the Daily Mirror and then as an advertising copywriter, famously creating the slogan 'Go to work on an egg'.
During the last 30 years she has published more than 20 novels, collections of short stories, television movies, newspaper and magazine articles and become a familiar face and voice on the BBC.
In October 2002 she was named the first writer-in-residence at The Savoy Hotel in London.
Fay and her third husband Nick live in Dorset.
