JOHN GOSDEN and Jimmy Fortune excelled with a Group One double courtesy of Raven's Pass and Rainbow View on Queen Elizabeth II Stakes day at Ascot on Saturday.
Raven's Pass has chased home Aidan O'Brien's dual Classic winner Henrythenavigator three times this year but exacted his revenge with a length defeat in the QEII.

Fortune kicked for home first and was rewarded with a comfortable success aboard the

3-1 chance – although French raider Tamayuz failed to run his race and finished just fourth.

"The jockey and trainer have finally got it right," exclaimed Gosden. "It is not bad being in front of that good horse for a change, and he had to come and get us.

"I have a sense of relief about the filly and a sense of elation about this one, so it is a good combination."

"He was beaten by the draw in the Guineas and then ran a blinder in the St James' Palace Stakes," Gosden added.

"We then let Tamayuz have 12 lengths in the Jean Prat and we let Henry get the run on us in a slow-run Sussex.

"We knew this time we were going to be a little handier – that was the only plan.

"The plan now is to go to the Breeders' Cup and he could run in the Mile or the Classic."

Earlier in the afternoon Rainbow View had cemented her position as 1000 Guineas favourite when taking her unbeaten run to four in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile.

After coming off the bridle for the first time in her career, she eyeballed Luca Cumani's Fantasia and stretched away to collect by two and a half lengths.

Guineas sponsors Stan James trimmed her to 5-2 at the head of the market, with Ladbrokes going 2-1 and Coral, Totesport and William Hill all offering just 7-4.

Gosden said: "The boys tell me it was loose ground, and that's no good and it turned into a real test of stamina. I'm delighted with her because I didn't train her for such a test of stamina.

"The second horse is a very nice filly and you'll find it's a top-class field – it would be like a champion two-year-old filly race.

"We will aim for the Guineas, obviously, and I think fillies who win this race as a test of stamina do stay (a mile and a half)."

He added that he has "a little idea" for another run this autumn, which would appear to be the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita next month.

At Ascot yesterday Sixties Icon followers had a brief moment of panic as the 11-10 favourite missed the break and lost half a dozen lengths in the Grosvenor Casinos Cumberland Lodge Stakes – but it made very little difference.

Jeremy Noseda's 2006 St Leger winner and solid Group performer was quickly back into contention under Frankie Dettori as Sugar Ray took the small field along at a sedate pace.

When Dettori pushed the button, luck was on his side as a perfect gap opened and he pulled readily away to win by two and a quarter lengths.

Nearly-horse King's Apostle picked the perfect moment to start winning again in the Group Two John Guest Diadem Stakes.

The William Haggas-trained 12-1 shot is known to not be straightforward and had flashed home on several occasions in big handicaps, taking third in the Wokingham and second in the Stewards' Cup.

The application of a visor seemed to have an impact and with Liam Jones always keeping within touching distance of the leaders, there was enough in the tank to reach the post a neck ahead of the 11-2 favourite Diabolical.

Over at the Curragh yesterday the in-form trainer Richard Hannon enjoyed further success with a terrific double.

He collected the biggest of all sales races as Soul City refused to give way in the Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Million and then proceeded to dominate the fillies version when Baileys Cacao finished second to stablemate Minor Vamp.

Favourite Luminous Eyes threw down a determined challenge on the far side but she had no answer to the devastating turn of foot demonstrated by Minor Vamp.
