Hidden Gem: Jenny's, Harrogate

TRYING to find a tea shop in Harrogate is not too hard. Finding Jenny's takes a little planning but with some of each you'll find it using the town's free tourist street map, just off Montpellier Hill.
So, it's hidden and it's a gem, and quite charming. On warm sunny days, there are patio tables but this was one of those harsh winter days that sweep through the spa town. Under-dressed, wet, we plunged into Jenny's to find warmth and solace in a bowl of pea, mint and ham soup and a pot of tea, followed by toasted teacakes, then a pot of Lapsang Suchong and cake.
The interior is soothing, with buttermilk walls, black bentwood chairs, a bow window, planked ceiling, willow pattern crockery, nice staff. A couple of American tourists were chattering happily in a corner when we arrived and were still there when we left.
Prices are moderate: pots of tea from £1.50, £1.60 for a teacake, home-baked cakes from £2.25, a choice of soup at £3.50, sandwiches from £3.85, toasted sandwiches from £4.45, a brace of crumpets a bit pricey at £2.50.
7 Montpellier Mews, Montpellier Street, Harrogate HG1 2TQ. Tel: 01423 525554. Jenny's is open every day, except Sunday, from 10am
to 4pm, with longer hours and Sunday opening later in the year.
