It was the day they cleared their 17 points deficit and moved into plus points.
"It's the first target achieved and we have got there quicker than most people reckoned we would," said Rotherham manager Mark Robins.
"It has been a magnificent ef
fort by the players and the response at the end from the supporters was their appreciation for how the players have gone about tackling the points deficit."
That ovation was in marked contrast to the end of the first half in which they had clearly been second best to a Grimsby side who played surprisingly well considering they were both managerless and winless.
A quality 28th-minute long-ranger from midfielder Danny Boshell had Grimsby deservedly ahead at the break.
Four minutes into the second half, Reuben Reid headed home from Alex Rhodes's centre.
Mark Hudson put the Millers in front after 57 minutes with his first goal of the season, a low 20- yarder which went under Phil Barnes but the Grimsby goalkeeper had no chance with the 30-yarder from Micky Cummins with 20 minutes left.
The display was capped 10 minutes from time by a header from Richie Barker, on as a substitute on his return to the club from Hartlepool.
