ENGLAND coach Tony Smith has told the fringe players involved in tomorrow's Gillette Fusion international against Wales that strong performances could see them play their way into his World Cup plans.
Eight of the players who were named in the World Cup squad on Tuesday will feature at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium tomorrow and Smith is keen that the remaining nine produce their best in a match against an inexperienced Welsh team.

"There's a lot for every player to play for," said Smith, who has given the 15 Leeds and St Helens players who were involved in last Saturday's Super League grand final a hard-earned rest. "I'm looking for very good performances from those who have played at this level before and for the others to perform because they could well be put on stand-by for the World Cup.

"I am sure if I asked any of the players who aren't in the travelling squad whether they wanted to be on the plane, they would all say 'yes'.

"In the event of injuries on Friday night, I'd pick the appropriate person if someone fell out of the squad so it's imperative they put their hand up both in training and in the game.

"They are all playing for their country which is a very important factor as well."

In the absence of Adrian Morley, who has not yet recovered from a stomach injury, England will be captained by his Warrington team-mate Martin Gleeson, the first time in his career that the former Huddersfield centre has worn the captain's armband.

"Martin has made a tremendous progression over the years and is one of the most experienced players in the squad," explained Smith, who will look for Gleeson to have an active role from stand-off, a position he has occupied only intermittently. "I want him to get the ball in his hands rather than sit out at centre waiting for it to come to him."

Smith has named Hull KR's Shaun Briscoe at full-back and has an exciting right-side combination of Peter Fox and Michael Shenton, both of whom were unlucky not to make the World Cup squad. On the left, Mark Calderwood plays on the wing alongside Paul Sykes with Salford's 18-year-old scrum-half Richard Myler partnering Gleeson at half-back.

Four members of the starting pack will be on the plane to Townsville next Monday – Wigan duo Mickey Higham and Gareth Hock, Warrington's Ben Westwood and Rob Purdham, who is joined by club-mate Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Wigan prop Stuart Fielden.

Bradford back row Jamie Langley has to settle for a place on the bench alongside Huddersfield players David Hodgson and Darrell Griffin and a third Londoner, Tony Clubb.

England: Briscoe (Hull KR); Fox (Hull KR), Shenton (Castleford), Sykes (Bradford), Calderwood (Wigan); Gleeson (Warrington, capt), Myler (Salford); Fielden (Wigan), Higham (Wigan), McCarthy-Scarsbrook (Harlequins), Hock (Wigan), Westwood (Warrington), Purdham (Harlequins). Substitutes: Hodgson (Huddersfield), Langley (Bradford), Griffin (Huddersfield), Clubb (Harlequins). Reserve: Atkins (Wakefield).

Scotland are celebrating a coup after securing the services of Australian winger Michael Robertson for the World Cup.

The 25-year-old had been tipped for a late call-up by the Kangaroos after scoring a hat-trick of tries in Manly's 40-0 grand final triumph over Melbourne on Sunday.

Scotland: C Armit (Canterbury Bulldogs), D Brough (Wakefield, capt), D Colton (Doncaster), P Coupar (Edinburgh Eagles), G Cowan (Wests Tigers), J Duffy (Widnes), Bn Fisher (Hull KR), A Henderson (Castleford), I Henderson (NZ Warriors), K Henderson (Wakefield), J Howieson (Sheffield), P Jackson (Huddersfield), W Liddell (Brisbane Easts), S Logan (Canberra), N Lowe (Keighley), D McConnell (Leigh), D McGilvery (Wakefield), I Morrison (Widnes), G Morton (Widnes), M Nanyn (Oldham), L Paterson (Widnes), M Robertson (Manly), J Steel (Hull KR), O Wilkes (Wakefield).

SAMOA and Tonga have named 12 Super League players in their World Cup squads.

The Samoan contingent includes Huddersfield's former Kiwi hooker David Faiumu, Leeds forwards Ali Lauitiiti and Kylie Leuluai, St Helens three-quarters Francis Meli and Willie Talau and Bradford second row David Solomona.
