HUDDERSFIELD Giants have confirmed that veteran Australian prop John Skandalis is leaving the club after suffering a career-ending knee injury.

The 32-year-old former Wests Tigers forward was out of contact at the end of the season and is returning to his old club in a youth development role.

Skandalis, who played a strong role in the Giants reaching the Super League play-offs for the fir
st time last year, had been hoping to play alongside his former Wests Tigers team-mate and friend Brett Hodgson, who is joining Huddersfield next season.

"That's one disappointment for myself, that I didn't get the chance to stay on for one more year and play with Brett," said Skandalis. "He's really excited about coming over."

Even with Skandalis going, Hodgson will still be surrounded by familiar faces next season with Paul Whatuira, Shane Elford and Jamahl Lolesi all having played for Wests Tigers before signing for the Giants.

Huddersfield also feature a six-strong element of former Wigan players in their current squad and David Hodgson, Martin Aspinwall, Luke Robinson, Kevin Brown, Stuart Jones and Stephen Wild will not be short of motivation tonight.

The match had to be rescheduled from early June because of work on the JJB Stadium pitch and Hodgson, who joined Huddersfield via a spell at Salford, is looking forward to his return.

"The JJB Stadium is always a good place for me to go," he said. "I had five years there and plenty of good times."

Huddersfield go into the match looking to bounce back from the disappointment of their second-half performance at home to Warrington last week, when they surrendered an 18-6 interval lead to lose 19-18.

A home victory would put fifth-placed Wigan three points clear of the team immediately below them, Bradford Bulls.

Hull prop Paul King has agreed a new two-year contract with the Super League club. The, 29-year-old is out with a broken foot and was out of contract at the end of the season.
