LEEDS Rhinos turned on the style to record the biggest win of their title defence and open up an ominous seven-point lead at the top of the engage Super League table.
Ten tries, including a hat-trick from Danny McGuire, made for the perfect warm-up for Friday's trip to Bradford as Wakefield were swept away by the champions' brio and spirit of adventure.
Trinity, who have now conceded 102 points against Leeds this season, had gone into the match buoyed by a six-match winning run but they were brought back to earth with an almighty crash by a team playing at the top of its game.
Although they were level at 6-6 after 20 minutes it was hard to escape the suspicion that Wakefield were hanging in there by their fingertips, a grip which proved too tenuous to hold back a Leeds team which displayed an insatiable hunger for points in the second quarter.
A try by Eric Anselme, the French Test second row making his Headingley debut, edged Leeds ahead before Rob Burrow polished off an accomplished move for Kevin Sinfield's third goal to leave Trinity trailing 18-6.
If the Wildcats thought things could not get any worse they quickly found they were wrong as Leeds ripped their tissue-thin shreds to tatters with some scintillating play which brought them three more tries before the interval.
No team in Super League has handled as confidently as Leeds have this season and the Rhinos delivered an exhibition in how to move the ball at speed under full control to leave Trinity in despair.
Wakefield were powerless to halt the rampaging Rhinos who cut loose from close to the halfway line through Carl Ablett, Gareth Ellis and Brent Webb for the supporting Danny McGuire to score.
Leeds extended their lead straight from the kick off when Wakefield centre Tony Martin's wild missed tackle on Keith Senior as the Great Britain veteran fielded Danny Brough's restart ushered them through for a fifth try.
Senior trundled clear before releasing the ball to Burrow who linked up with Scott Donald for Simon Worrall to charge through and score.
Sinfield converted and maintained his 100 per cent record as the half-time hooter sounded following a try by Senior which came from a dazzling exchange of passes by Burrow, Matt Diskin and Webb.
Leeds had taken just two minutes to show their threat in attack and readiness to punish the slight lapse in concentration by Wakefield, who succumbed to a sucker punch as Diskin ran the ball blind down the right for Carl Ablett to cut through and send McGuire in for the opening try.
Wakefield almost levelled when winger Damien Blanch squeezed over in the right corner only for the referee to spot a forward pass from Danny Sculthorpe, a near-miss which brought a positive response from John Kear's side who hit straight back with a try by Sam Obst.
The Australian hooker was Trinity's most dangerous player and took his try well, racing on to a perfectly-delayed pass from Jamie Rooney for Danny Brough to land the simple conversion.
The Wildcats made a bold start to the second half but their resistance merely served to delay the inevitable as Leeds held firm before striking twice more to go ever closer to reaching a half century of points for the first time in 2008.
Ablett, a strong runner out wide, scored the first from a break in centrefield by Webb before McGuire completed his hat-trick by capitalising on smart play by the impressive Sinfield, who held the ball out in a three-man tackle for the stand-off to steal in.
Brough grabbed a consolation try for Wakefield by pouncing on a low kick by Brad Drew but there was no stopping Leeds who passed the 50-point barrier with a well-worked try by Diskin which the hooker richly deserved before Senior swept through for his second in the 75th minute.
With Sinfield having earned a rest in the dug-out, Burrow stepped up to add goals to both and the Rhinos' bumper win was complete.
