St Helens have confirmed their interest in Hull's wantaway prop Garreth Carvell but are unlikely to move for the 28-year-old until he secures his release from their Super League rivals.
Carvell signed a new three-year contract with Hull two weeks ago but 24 hours later informed the club he had had a change of heart, prompting speculation that he had been offered a better deal elsewhere.
Bradford and Wigan both announced last wee
k that they were not in the running for Carvell but yesterday St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus said the Super League leaders were keen to secure his services.
"Garreth Carvell is a very good player and are we are interested in him," said McManus.
"If he had not signed his contract extension then, come September, we would have been interested in signing him but we can't do anything about it now.
"As far as we are concerned, he is a Hull player for the next three years unless we hear otherwise."
The sport's anti-tampering laws prevent St Helens from approaching Carvell until September 1 without Hull's express consent. Hull are unlikely to agree to that unless St Helens indicate they are willing to pay a transfer fee or offer another top-class forward as part of a player-exchange deal.
Seven players from Catalans and Harlequins will face tonight's meeting of the disciplinary committee, six of them for their part in a brawl which marred the end of the match between the clubs.
Catalans stand-off Adam Mogg and Harlequins prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, who were both sent off, have been charged with running in and punching while Dragons hooker Casey McGuire and the Harlequins trio of David Howell, Rikki Sheriffe and Michael Worrincy have been charged with punching. In addition, Quins forward Tony Clubb has been charged with making a careless high tackle.
The loss of Mogg and McGuire through suspension would be a blow to Catalans ahead of Saturday's match at home to Leeds.
