SHEFFIELD United has become the first English football club to gain a shirt sponsorship deal with a foreign country.

The island of Malta, which gained independence 44 years ago, has agreed to support the Blades for the next two years as they attempt to win promotion to the Premier League.

Although the money involved has not been revealed, the Blades say it is a
"lucrative" deal which extends their growing links across the globe.

The team will wear the visitMalta.com logo across their shirts – starting from tomorrow in the televised Championship game against Birmingham City.

Chief executive Jason Rockett said: "Whilst financially a good deal, the sponsorship will see us working in partnership with the island's government to deliver dual benefits including the development of players, community schemes and pro-actively marketing Malta as a tourist destination. The spin-offs for us and Malta could be huge."

Last week, the Blades signed Maltese international goalkeeper Justin Haber on a free transfer.

The Blades will manage an academy for young players on the island, although the number of Maltese internationals who have been successful in British football to date is extremely limited.

Defender Dylan Kerr made a few appearances for Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers in the early Nineties and striker Michael Mifsud plays for Coventry City.

Chris Fenech, Malta Tourist Authority director, said: "We believe that the collaboration between the two parties, which will stretch to beyond the simple footballingaspects, will be of benefit to all.

"Apart from associating Malta with one of the most historic clubs in the football league, this partnership will enable the Malta Tourism Authority to help at a social level.

"It is our intention to carry out elements of corporate social responsibility both in the Sheffield community and neighbouring areas as well as supporting Sheffield United in their future ventures (in Malta].

The deal replaces the club's previous sponsorship package with finance company Capital One, which lasted for two seasons.
