Sheffield Wednesday v
Norwich City

BRIAN LAWS has issued a chilling reminder to Sheffield Wednesday about the danger of taking safety for granted.
The Owls host Norwich tomorrow knowing that a victory might not be required to avoid relegation.

But Laws played in the Nottingham Forest side that inflicted a 3-0 defeat on the Owls on the final day of the 1989-90 season when they only needed a d
raw to stay in the top flight.

Defeat sent the Owls tumbling into the old Second Division and Luton pulled off an escape act by winning 3-2 at Derby County.

The Owls manager plans to remind his players of that experience during the build-up to tomorrow's game and will stress that they cannot afford to rely on anyone else to avoid the drop.

"We can't think we are in a comfortable position, we have got to go out and win this game," he stressed. "I remember what happened at Hillsborough all those years ago, it is still embedded in my mind and I will be passing on that knowledge.

"Brian Clough gave a speech prior kick-off telling us not to switch off. He said anyone who went out on the pitch with their 'flip-flops on' would not be coming back after the summer. We knew we had a duty to all the other clubs surrounding Sheffield Wednesday at the bottom and we did a job."

The Owls have also been warned not to expect any favours by Norwich manager Glenn Roeder.

Although Norwich are not involved in the relegation scrap or the promotion race, Roeder wants his side to go all out for victory. "I know we're safe but we owe it to ourselves to create a winning culture," he said. "It's also important to the other managers involved in the relegation struggle that we put on a proper performance. I would hate to think the other managers would look at our performance and say we didn't do our best."

Laws, meanwhile, is confident that, if the Owls avoid the drop, they have every chance of pushing for promotion next season.

Apart from the probability of having new owners, Laws believes the return of a fully-fit squad will make a massive difference. The Owls have nine players injured and will be relying on five loan signings to help keep the club up.
