Michael Vaughan scored ten runs in a half hour stay at the crease on his return to action for Yorkshire.
Playing in his first match since standing down as England captain, Vaughan struck two fours and lasted 19 balls before he was caught behind with the score on 19.
Fellow opener Andrew Gale was also out for 10 as Yorkshire stumbled to 63-2 after 23
overs.
Yorkshire had earlier dismissed Kent for 227 on the opening day of the County Championship match at Scarborough.
Anthony McGrath polished off the innings when he had Martin van Jaarsveld lbw for 107, the South African having held the Kent innings together in superb fashion as wickets tumbled around him.
Van Jaarsveld, who faced 139 balls and struck 15 fours and two sixes, was one of only two players to reach double figures, the other being Joe Denly.
After slipping to 108-6 early in the afternoon session, Kent rallied to claim a bonus point in conditions that were never easy for batting.
Deon Kruis claimed the first two wickets to fall, striking with the first ball of the 10th over when he had Robert Key caught behind off Gerard Brophy and then sending back Neil Dexter in the 14th over, caught at second slip by Anthony McGrath.
Earlier, McGrath had dropped Joe Denly at second slip off Kruis from the ninth ball of the game.
Kruis produced a fine opening spell of 2-26 from nine overs and was well backed up by Matthew Hoggard and Darren Gough.
Gough claimed Yorkshire's third wicket when he trapped Denly lbw four balls after the batsman had brought up his half-century from 61 deliveries. It was a strange sort of innings from Denly, who played one or two outstanding strokes but also rode his luck.
Kent slipped to 79-4 in 24th over when Darren Stevens edged Rana Naved-ul-Hasan to McGrath at second slip, but van Jaarsveld (26) and Geraint Jones (3) averted further damage before the break.
Resuming on 101-4 after lunch, they lost Jones and Ryan McLaren in quick succession, the former caught behind off Matthew Hoggard and the latter run-out after van Jaarsveld pushed out to point, from where Adam Lyth hurled down the stumps at the non-striker's end.
Van Jaarsveld reached fifty from 86 balls with nine fours and added 57 for the seventh wicket with James Tredwell, who was lbw to Darren Gough for nine.
Hoggard then had Amjad Khan caught at square-leg by Michael Vaughan before van Jaarsveld reached his century from 133 balls.
Adil Rashid had Robbie Joseph caught at short-leg by Andrew Gale before van Jaarsveld departed to McGrath's medium pace, having passed 1,000 Championship runs for the season.
Yorkshire had earlier won the toss and elected to bowl with conditions overcast at North Marine Road, where captain Darren Gough was hoping to exploit the early morning cloud cover.
Michael Vaughan makes his first appearance in any form of cricket since announcing his resignation as England captain on August 3.
