Published Date: 20 July 2008
Yorkshire have beaten Surrey by 10 runs in the NatWest pro40 League.
David Wainwright's spell of 0-3 in his first four overs were crucial, as were the three early wickets shared by Rana Naved and Tim Bresnan.

Yorkshire's innings of 230 was based on a 57-run opening partnership between Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolp
h, and an unbeaten stand of 59 for the eighth wicket between Adil Rashid and Richard Pyrah.

SURREY INNINGS

40th over: Jade Dernbach hits the last three balls of the innings for 16 runs, but Yorkshire were already home and dry. Surrey needed 30 runs from the over.

39th over: The end is nigh for the Brown Caps. Jason Roy is bowled by Rana Naved, having been dropped by David Wainwright in the previous over. Yorkshire will surely win now. Surrey are 201-8, needing 30 off the final over.

38th over: Dangerman Chris Schofield is well caught by Adil Rashid in the deep off Darren Gough, for a rapid 58. People are starting to leave - this should be in the bag for Yorkshire now. 194-7

36th over: Anthony McGrath has Jon Batty caught at long-off by Richard Pyrah from a full-toss. 178-6.

35th over: Just six off the over from Tim Bresnan. 55 needed off five overs. 176-5.

34th over: Better over for Surrey, with 12 runs coming off Darren Gough. 170-5 - 61 needed off six overs.

32nd over: Terrific over from Darren Gough, conceding just two runs. 80 needed from eight overs.

31st over: Surrey are not going away quietly. Jon Batty hits a six and a four off Richard Pyrah. 149-5.

30th over: Darren Gough comes back into the attack and has Chris Jordan lbw for 38. Surrey are 136-5, but the required run rate is nine an over.

28th over: Two more boundaries to Schofield. 126-4. 105 needed off 12.

27th over: Three boundaries come in Wainwright's over, spoiling his impeccable figures, as Chris Schofield shows the value of using his feet to the spinners. Rana Naved and Jacques Rudolph get in each other's way on the boundary when they should have cut off a four from Chris Jordan. 115-4.

24th over: Usman Afzaal, bogged down by the spinners, tries a slog-sweep against Adil Rashid and top-edges the ball up in the air. 90-4. David Wainwright's four overs have cost just three runs.

22nd over: Just seven runs have come in five overs, but Chris Jordan relieves some of the pressure by cutting a four off Adil Rashid.

19th over: Another maiden from David Wainwright.

17th over: Wainwright comes and bowls a maiden.

14th over: Darren Gough comes on. In an inauspicious start, his first three deliveries are wide, four, six. 56-3.

13th over: Usman Afzaal cuts Richard Pyrah for four. 46-3.

8th over: Surrey are 25-3 as James Benning mis-times a pull and the ball loops back to bowler Tim Bresnan.

3rd over: Looking good for Yorkshire as Rana Naved-ul-Hasan has Mark Ramprakash lbw for one, and it's 8-2.

2nd over: Anthony McGrath takes a brilliant one-handed catch at second slip to remove Scott Newman off the bowling of Tim Bresnan, and Surrey are 7-1.

YORKSHIRE INNINGS

Yorkshire have set Surrey a target of 231 to win from 40 overs. The visitors made a good start, putting on 57 for the first wicket, but lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter and had to delay their push until the last three over, in which Adil Rashid and Richard Pyrah scored 36 runs. The eighth-wicket pair put on 59 runs.

40th over: Good over from Pedro Collins, despite a no-ball on what should have been the final delivery. Richard Pyrah can only make a single off the free hit. 10 from the over and Yorkshire finish on 230.

39th over: Another 13 runs in the over, with Richard Pyrah and Adil Rashid hitting a boundary apiece through the leg side.

38th over: Rashid clips Usman Afzaal over wide long-on to bring up the 200. Pyrah then creams a six over cow corner. 13 runs in the over. 207-7.

36th over: Progress fairly slow. 189-7.

32nd over: Deja vu here as Tim Bresnan his Usman Afzaal straight to long-on. 171-7.

30th over: Anthony McGrath perishes in similar fashion to Lyth, caught on the long-off boundary off Afzaal for 37. 164-6.

28th over: Adam Lyth holes out to wide long-off off Afzaal for 28, and Yorkshire are 155-5.

27th over: Lyth belts Matthew Spriegel over extra cover for four. 151-4.

24th over: James Benning makes a hash of trying to catch a top-edged sweep from Lyth and drops a simple chance. 135-4.

22nd over: Spin at either end. Anthony McGrath drives Chris Schofield handsomely through the covers. 123-4.

17th over: Gerard Brophy is stumped off Matthew Spriegel's second ball. 96-4.

16th over: Anthony McGrath waits for a slower ball - it was a free hit following a no-ball - and carts it over the man on the deep point boundary. 94-3.

15th over: Rana Naved-ul-Hasan perishes to an astonishing diving catch from Usman Afzaal at wide leg-slip. 80-3, and a good start is in danger of being undone.

13th over: Andrew Gale loses his middle stump to Jade Dernbach, having made 44 runs from 40 balls. 70-2.

9th over: Jacques Rudolph is caught behind off Pedro Collins for 20. Yorkshire are 57-1 and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan comes out in his new pinch-hitting role.

7th: Gale edges Pedro Collins through the vacant third slip area, then cracks him through point.
46-0.

6th over: Boundaries are coming fairly frequently through the off-side, although Jacques Rudolph is deceived by a slower ball and ducks in to it. 36-0.

3rd over: Yorkshire, who won the toss and opted to bat, make a more solid start than they did on Wednesday. 12-0.

They are unchanged from the side that lost at Essex on Wednesday, although the order has been switched, with Jacques Rudolph opening and Gerard Brophy moved down.

Surrey: Newman, Benning, Ramprakash, Afzaal, Roy, Batty, Spriegel, Jordan, Schofield, Collins, Dernbach.

Yorkshire: Gale, Rudolph, McGrath, Brophy, Lyth, Rashid, Bresnan, Naved, Pyrah, Gough, Wainwright.
