Leeds appeal rejected

LEEDS United will start the season 15 points behind on Saturday after their appeal was thrown out by the Football League.

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates made an impassioned plea to the chairmen of the 71 Football League clubs at a London meeting.

But an overwhelming majority - more than 75 per cent - voted first that Leeds deserved to be punished for infringing Football League rules, then voted again by the same proportion to uphold the 15-point deduction.

Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney told Sky Sports News: "Leeds United presented their appeal and why they thought the board was wrong.

"We then had a vote which overwhelmingly endorsed the decision that there should be a sanction.

"In a second vote the League overwhelmingly endorsed the sanction. Overwhelmingly means the vote was over 75% in support of the board.

"Leeds are starting the new season in League One as a valued member of the league's football family but with a penalty of 15 points."

I am very disappointed with the result of a 15 point penalty. I am more disappointed because the club has effectively been deducted 25 points, 10 at the end of last season and 15 at the start of this season. It beggars belief that the Football League should ask the competition as to whether or not the 15 point penalty should be activated. What did Lord Mawhinney expect? These are clubs who would wish to finish above Leeds in the League Table. Of course they are going to vote it through.

I'm a Blade, so not usually sympathetic to Leeds United (and especially not to Ken Bates), but seeing the Whites get hammered like this when the Hammers got rewarded for dishonesty makes my blood boil. The whole industry of English football is a sewer.

Thank you Mr Bates. You have taken Leeds to depths undreamed of. I suspect that the vote to confirm the 15 point sanction was against you and not the club. Your dubious machinations have caught you out as was always inevitable. May I suggest that having done the damage you take the honourable way out and fall on your sword. Give Leeds up to someone who, whilst they may not have LUFC in their hearts, at least knows what he is doing.

As Leeds fans, are we that naive to think that we would get a fair hearing - let's face it, there are 23 clubs who have a vested interest in seeing us docked 15 points! It smacks to me of the same old attitude - 'Dirty Leeds, Dirty Leeds'. When will Leeds ever get a fair hearing? Like them or loathe them, the only way forward now is to give Bates and Wise our backing and make our point on the football field.

"Bates made an impassioned plea". Shame he doesn't show the same 'passion' for the club by using it as a financial vehicle. He has no interest in LUFC; why was he not at the game on Saturday for instance ? He's driven this club into the ground and, presumably, will sell it on at a profit when he's ready. Did anyone ever think that the ex-chairman of a club that hated Leeds Utd and vice versa would EVER have the club's interests at heart ?
