Academy stars staying firmly on course for title

Yorkshire ECB

CALLUM Geldart blasted an unbeaten 134 and spinner Gurman Randhawa conjured up an eight-wicket feat as Yorkshire Academy crushed Hull to continue their relentless march towards the championship.

The Academy remain undefeated after 12 matches, though champions York are still in contention after an eight-wicket win over Cleethorpes, while second-placed Scarborough had their home game against Harrogate rained off.

Gary Ballance played his part in the Academy's latest victory by chalking up a half-century and Charlie Roebuck hit 43 but Geldart dominated the batting as they topped the 300-mark for the second time this season and declared with one over to go. Matt Wilkinson struck eight fours and two sixes in his 65 for Hull but to no avail as the Academy won by 104 runs.

Simon Mason and Dan Wilson were the architects of York's victory against Cleethorpes, who, ironically, had the game's top scorer in Bill Kirby, who made an unbeaten 118, including 14 fours and a six.

Mason had 19 fours in his undefeated 112, while Wilson hit 16 fours and a six in making 92 and sharing a second-wicket partnership of 182.

Best bowling feat of the day belonged to Barnsley paceman Oliver Hannon-Dolby, who marked his return from injury by taking 6-7 in five overs against Sheffield United, who were shot out for 51 in 18.5 overs and lost by eight wickets after being 26-7.

Doncaster suffered their first league defeat since May 9 as Castleford beat them by 16 runs. Chris Young made 39 and took 5-45 for the winners.

Appleby Frodingham won despite an unbeaten 76 by Driffield captain Joe Fraser.
