England could partner Rashid with both Moeen and Dawson in ODI

CAPTAIN Eoin Morgan revealed England are considering playing three spinners against Pakistan in today's opening one-day international at the Ageas Bowl.

The recent dry conditions, as well as the need to prepare for England’s winter tours, have persuaded Morgan and coach Trevor Bayliss to consider the bold move. Hampshire left-arm spinner Liam Dawson – at his home ground – could therefore come into the XI for his first ODI cap alongside Moeen Ali and Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid.

Morgan said: “Having Liam Dawson brings the option of playing three spinners and that is something we might have to take into consideration as we look ahead to the winter tours of Bangladesh and India. It will be a very tough series against Pakistan, especially as the recent weather means conditions may suit them more than they suit us initially. It is a good test leading into the winter.”

Morgan also backed Alex Hales to rediscover his touch with the bat after a poor Test series.

The opener struggled for runs in the four matches against Pakistan, but will be looking to flourish against the white ball.

Morgan added: “Alex played very well in the limited-overs matches in South Africa last winter even though he didn’t have the best time in the Tests. He played out of his skin. I have been in that position before and it’s a nice feeling to be able to play with freedom in white-ball cricket.”

All-rounder Ben Stokes is back in the squad after a calf injury but, despite bowling in the nets, Morgan confirmed he will play as a batsman only for at least the first two matches of the five-game series.

Mmeanwhile, England and Nottinghamshire seamer Stuart Broad is to undergo a second scan on his injured left ankle.

The 30-year-old Test bowler was due to make a rare Specsavers County Championship appearance for the Division One strugglers against Yorkshire this week, but was withdrawn on England and Wales Cricket Board advice.

Having had an initial scan, Broad will undergo a follow-up to determine the seriousness of the problem. News is expected by the end of the week.
