Finch milestone not enough for Alliance
York Senior
Champions Woodhouse Grange stamped their authority over leading challengers Clifton Alliance to win by by 173 runs.
Grange batted first against a home attack boosted by the return of spinner Alex Renton who, having captured seven wickets the previous Saturday for York in the Yorkshire League, has decided to skip back over the fence dividing the two clubs to return to his roots.
In the event, he only claimed one wicket and was powerless as Woodhouse duo Nick Hadfield (93) and Lloyd Devlin (64) embarked on a second-wicket stand of 149.
Aaron Finch claimed 3-92, but Grange's total was then boosted when Joel Hughes battered 45 off 26 balls to post a final target of 263-7.
Australian Finch opened the innings for Clifton boasting an average of 99 and requiring four runs to become the first player to reach 500 runs in the season. This was accomplished as he made a quick 16 but his dismissal sparked a major collapse which saw Alliance bowled out for 90 as Paul Grewer, with 5-24 from an 11-over spell, and captain Steve Burdett (3-29) gave their side's chances of retaining the title a major boost.
The highest aggregate in the division was posted at Hornsea where excellent batting conditions saw the home side reach 233-5 but then found them trumped by Thirsk's talented young batsmen. Early home runs were posted by Paul Clappison (53), Paul Johnson (28) and teenager Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who made 46.
Australian Tom Polkinghorne made inroads with 3-49 but an effective unbeaten 62 from Richard Medforth ensured a challenging home total.
Thirsk's opening duo of Liam McKendry and Sean Holmes picked up the gauntlet and put on 144 before Holmes fell for 47. McKendry went on to notch his second three-figure total before falling for 104 but brother Ryan then made 33 to see Thjirsk to a five-wicket win in the 48th over.
Dunnington's Harwood Williams went one better when he recorded his third century of the season at Pickering.
The West Indian made 110 not out in a total of 188-7 and, in doing so, assumed the mantle of the league's leading run scorer. Craig Aconley kept the home side in contention with 4-37 and then saw Chris Nicholls press home the advantage with an unbeaten 75 to steer the Pikes to a five-wicket win despite the efforts of Dave Kitching 3-50.
