Frustration for many in the south

Gladedale South Yorkshire IT proved to be a frustrating day for the South Yorkshire League clubs, with almost all the matches throughout all six divisions eventually being rained off.

None were more frustrated than Elsecar, who were hoping to regain top spot in the Premier Division after facing scheduled opponents Wickersley, who enjoyed a narrow two-point advantage over the Armroyd Laners with five games left to play.

After the match was washed out, Elsecar will still be chasing what they hope will be their 16th league title.

Wickersley, with seven top-flight championships behind them, are now certain to qualify for the Yorkshire Council Championship play-offs, the cut-off date for which is next weekend.

The only exception to the wash-out was Darfield's Premier Division home date with Houghton Main, the guests dismissed for 143, opener Nick Bisby hitting 47 and junior Aidan Morris stroking a stylish half-century.

Brothers Carl and Paul Wilkinson shared the Houghton wickets and Darfield went on to a five-wicket win, with half-centuries from Scott Adamson and Simon Potter.

Australian Leigh Brennan performed well by picking up three wickets for the disappointed home side.
