Blast from Root sees Doncaster struggling

IT was a good week for the Root family. After Joe’s promotion to England vice-captain, younger brother Billy took over the spotlight with an unbeaten 218 as Sheffield Collegiate crushed Doncaster Town by 233 runs

Playing shots all round the wicket, Root hit 22 fours and seven sixes in an innings that took only 177 balls and included a stand of 190 with Simon Guy (92) as the home side hit 400-5.

Doncaster were never in the hunt after losing five cheap wickets in less than four overs, Matt Lee (4-46) and Matt Dixon (3-28) doing the damage.

Adam Whatley smashed 119 in 66 balls as York raced to 358-8.

Fellow opener Simon Lambert hit 50 in a 178-run stand while Liam and Ryan McKendry each fell just short of a half century.

Ryan McKendry then picked up 6-51 and, with Tom Pringle

(3-35), skittled Cleethorpes for 147. The runs kept coming at Harrogate where 73 from Jonathan Tattersall took him past 500 in six matches. But this week he was eclipsed by James Latham, who hit a quick-fire 176.

Harrogate’s 377-5 was too good for Hull, who were dismissed for 136 with Sam Davies taking 5-30.

Yorkshire Academy’s James Logan included three wickets in four balls in a 4-30 spell as Sheffield United were bowled out for 138, South African Jaco Scholtz making 60. Mosun Hussain (39no) steered Academy home by eight wickets

Barnsley’s impressive start stuttered when Archie Ogden (68no) and Patrick Castledon (36no) put on 105 to take Rotherham Town past the 184 target with six wickets in hand.

George Drury (90) and Owen Goldsworthy (52) were top scorers in Driffield Town’s 247-7 with Jamie Hopper (4-32) leading the way as Appleby Frodingham were dismissed for 181.

Bradford

Leaders strengthen position in tight win

PUDSEY St Lawrence consolidated their position as Division One leaders with a thrilling one-wicket win over Hanging Heaton.

Captain James Smith guided his side home with an over to spare after making a sparkling 111 not out from 92 balls.

Defeat was tough on Hanging Heaton’s Ian Philliskirk, who made an unbeaten 123 as his side posted a total of 262-6.

Another player to score his second ton of the campaign was Cleckheaton’s Tim Jackson. He made 141 as his side saw off Undercliffe by 124 runs.

Jackson shared a third-wicket stand of 132 with Ian Nicholson (60) which helped Cleckheaton to make 295-4. Undercliffe, despite 64 from opener Hamid Khan, were dismissed for 171.

Yorkshire wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd made his maiden Bradford League century for New Farnley as they defeated newly-promoted Saltaire by 158-runs to register their first win.

Hodd was joined in a third-wicket stand of 134 by Lee Goddard (66) as New Farnley hit 299-4. Saltaire slumped to 6-4 before Amer Ayoub (45), Shoukat Ali (39) and Adeel Ashraf (34) pushed their side’s total to 141.

Chris Brice was the match winner for Woodlands as they defeated East Bierley by 69 runs.

Brice scored a crucial 39 which helped swell the total to 156.

Paceman James Pearson took 5-44 as third-placed Pudsey Congs dismissed Lightcliffe for 87 to secure a 172-run win.

Bradford & Bingley’s young pace bowler Jack Hartley marked his selection for the Bradford League in the T20 Challenge match with Yorkshire Vikings at Pudsey Congs tonight with a match-winning performance.

He took 7-42 as his side bowled out struggling Farsley for just 70 chasing Bradford & Bingley’s 206.

Brown and Webb team up to ruin Otley’s hopes

STEPHEN BROWN was the star of the show as Kirkstall inflicted a first defeat of the season on defending champions Otley.

Brown (44) and Andy Siddall (45) led the way as Kirkstall reached 203 with Ricky Halloran picking up 4-45. Normally Otley would have passed that without too much trouble but a 4-42 spell from Brown and 4-49 from Tom Webb restricted them to 178-9.

That allowed Beckwithshaw to open up a 14-point lead at the top after they comfortably overcame Burley. Yasser Ali, who hit 59no in Beckwithshaw’s 248-5, took 4-21 and with Istikhar Hussain (4-45) dismissed Burley for 159.

Australian Damian Lawrence hit a fine 70 in Follifoot’s 208-7 at Bilton who were unable to match it despite the efforts of Odge Davey (48) and Mustahsan Shah (40).

Umer Yaqoob (4-23) and Rafes Ishtaq (4-51) were simply too hot to handle and the home side were bowled out for 143.

A stand of 165 between Alex Bailey (104) and Rory Kroon (62no) helped Ilkley to 261-5, but Rawdon put up a spirited chase headed by Kuda Samunderu (83) and Ryan Gladwin (62no) and got home with two wickets to spare.

Edward Hayhurst (52no) top-scored in Collingham’s 179, but an unbeaten 52 from St Kitts all-rounder Larry Audain clinched victory for North Leeds.

Guiseley looked on the way to a first victory when Peter Towner hit 78 as they pursued Steeton’s 172 total.

But James Freebury came on to bowl and in a 1.4 over spell took the last three wickets without conceding a run to give Steeton victory by nine runs.

Waleed Akhtar (133) and Asif Yousef (54) put on 106 in Green Lane reached 235-7 on the way to a 63-run win over Thackley that sent them to the top of Division Two.

Huddersfield

Last-wicket pair send champions spinning

ALAN Mynett and Ben Potter shared a last wicket stand of 97 as Premiership champions Hoylandswaine inflicted Honley’s first defeat of the season.

Mynett (59no) and Potter (50) lifted Hoylandswaine’s total to 299, which also included 74 by Sarjinder Pal Singh and 70 from Gharib Nawaz.

Potter (4-40) and Yasir Abbas (4-86) restricted Honley’s reply to 254, leaving leaders Scholes as the top-flight’s only remaining unbeaten team.

Tom Brook (76no), Peter Drysdale (67) and Toby Booth (51) guided Scholes to 233-5 against Shelley who managed only 167.

Last season’s runners-up Shepley maintained their challenge by sending Barkisland tumbling to their first defeat.

Shepley enjoyed a four-wicket win after Shahzada Khan (4-39) and Nasir Jamal (3-26) toppled Barkisland for 107.

Openers Andy Smith (84no) and Iqbal Khan (78no) shared an unbroken 192-run stand in 33.5 overs in Kirkburton’s 10-wicket victory at Skelmanthorpe, who were bowled out for 186 by Matthew Crookes (5-32) and Craig Fletcher (3-38).

Liam Fletcher (66) led Skelmanthorpe’s scoring.

Danny Taylor led Broad Oak’s fightback as they beat winless Golcar by two wickets.

Chasing Golcar’s 140, Broad Oak were reduced to 36-7 after 23 overs by Tim Welsford (4-30) and Steve Whitwam (3-12) before Taylor (65no) rescued them with a match-winning unbroken ninth wicket partnership of 73.

Greg Buckley (69) and Wasim Qasim (6-55) gave Delph and Dobcross the crucial edge against Elland.

Alex Walker (4-28), Chris Kilner (3-26) and Matt Bremner (3-41) were Slaithwaite’s match-winners in a three-run over against Moorlands.

Central Yorkshire

Methley maintain grip at the top of the table

OPENER Richard Foster smashed five sixes in an unbeaten century off 102 balls as Premiership champions Methley retained top spot by beating Buttershaw St Paul’s by nine wickets.

Methley stayed two points clear of Ossett, who defeated Hunslet Nelson.

Brothers Gurman and Rohan Randhawa each claimed three wickets as Hunslet were bowled out for 155, replying to Ossett’s 220-7 that featured 117 by Shoaib Latif who struck 17 boundaries.

Townville climbed to third place when Jack Hughes (54) and Jonathan Booth (41) led them to a four-wicket win at Wakefield Thornes.

Birstall slipped to their first league defeat against Wrenthorpe. James Glynn (37) and Jack Rich (22) put on 41 for the ninth wicket in Wrenthorpe’s 191-9 and Chris Leaf (4-39) and Glynn (3-42) toppled Birstall for 168.

An unbroken 106-run second-wicket stand between Sardar Khan (65no) and Sufyan Patel (42no) saw Batley to their first league win of the season against Altofts, who were 129 all out due to Muhammed Shahnawaz (6-30).

All-rounder Yasir Ali’s 64 and 3-53 was in vain for Mirfield Parish Cavaliers at Carlton.

Jonathan Henshaw (37) was the only Oulton batsman who reached double figures as they were routed for 71 by Neil Browne (4-18) in an eight-wicket defeat at Hopton Mills.

Veteran David Battye’s 6-38 failed to avert East Ardsley 135-run defeat at Northowram Fields, for whom Zafar Khan took 5-39.

John Dyson (78) and James Watling (5-18) steered Division One leaders East Leeds to a 111-run win against Adwalton.

Mirfield’s Alex Pearson hammered an unbeaten 130 off 83 balls at Rodley whose two-wicket defeat was hard on Gary Lewsley (104no).

South Yorkshire

Darfield come close before falling short

THE South Yorkshire League continues to surprise and delight – the winter reshuffle of players and the acquisition by some clubs of outstanding new signings creating a much more open and competitive division than for many years.

On Saturday, all eyes were on Whitley Hall, the league leaders, against Darfield, second and top of the new pretenders – and what a game it produced.

Chris Siddall stroked 123no but was almost caught up by Greig Batty who smashed 61no from 41 balls as Whitley made 326-4.

But Darfield set about it and ended on 303-9. Tabassum Bhatti, making 134 and James Ward 52.

Treeton moved up to second with a more familiar demolition job on Wath, who made just 94 after former England Under-19 star, Charlie Roebuck took 4-22, then hit 53no in 44 balls in a seven-wicket win.

The two shocks were Wickersley (217-7) losing to Aston Hall (273-8), for whom former Derbyshire 2ndXI Adam Whiteley made the season’s highest, 163 and Elsecar (86 all out) being smashed by Tickhill (248-6), thanks to James Stuart (96) and Steve Reid (50).

Hallam slipped to fourth, overcoming Conisbrough by 14 runs after scoring 201. Matt Newman, Hallam’s Kiwi seamer, produced the season’s best bowling (8-40).

Houghton Main (215-6) won a very evenly-matched tussle with Coal Aston (213-6), Ian Simon and Tanzeel Ali making half centuries, while Liam Johnson made 77no and took 3-52 but still ended up on the losing side.

Next week, Whitley are at Houghton Main, Darfield are at Conisbrough and second plays fourth when Treeton face Hallam at Washfield Lane. Aston Hall will try to maintain their resurgence against Elsecar, Tickhill are at Wath and Wickersley entertain Coal Aston.

York Senior

Rhodes inspires Stamford Bridge

THERE was no change at the top of the Hunters Premier Division this week as the top four sides all picked up maximum points.

Chris Booth (73) and Nick Hadfield (72) shared a second wicket partnership of 131 for Woodhouse Grange, that and an opening stand of 57 between Hadfield and Andrew Bilton (36) helped the League leaders to a total of 250-4 against Heworth.

The visitors made a promising start but when Oliver Sherwood was third out with the score on 98 the rest of the innings fell away, the last seven wickets adding only just 14 more runs, Christopher Suddaby (5-23) responsible for most of the batting side’s woes.

Second-placed Sheriff Hutton Bridge kept up the pressure on the leaders, maintaining their unbeaten record by inflicting a first defeat on league newcomers Scarborough. Alex Carrie (58) helped the home side reach 189-9 before the visitors held their nerve in a close finish to win with four wickets but only a couple of overs to spare.

Acomb returned to winning ways with an eight-wicket win at Clifton Alliance. Joe Ashdown (32) was the top scorer in the home side’s disappointing 104, Mark Bell finishing with 3-11. Skipper Andy Tute (62) and Joe Dale (37) put together a winning partnership of 79.

Stamford Bridge completed the winning quartet as they won at Hull Zingari by seven wickets. Yorkshire batsman Will Rhodes finished unbeaten on 110 and Kevin Murphy made 55 as they chased down the home side’s total of 194-9

Waddilove Cup

Addingham turn tables on Rawdon

THIRD Division Addingham produced the shock of the round when they eased past the 234-9 total of First Division Rawdon by seven wickets.

Harry Nicholson (51) top scored for Rawdon who stumbled in mid-innings but there were no hiccups for Addingham with Will Atkins (89no) and Ricky Palacio (96) putting on 180 for the third wicket.

Thackley turned the Division Two table upside down, crushing new leaders Green Lane by nine wickets. Jonathan Rudge produced a stunning 8-30 spell as Lane were dismissed for 44, half of which were scored by captain Neil Britton. Thackley knocked off the runs in 6.4 overs.

Josh Atkinson and David Hester each scored 59 in holders Otley’s 295 which was far too good for Illingworth despite Jamie Moorhouse’s half-century.

Mohsin Iqbal and Sam Boyden put on 100 for the eighth wicket to help Menston reach 131 but Toby Jacklin (62no) saw Collingham comfortably home.

Nick Smith was Adel’s hero taking 4-25 then top scoring with 32no as they passed Guiseley’s 117 with two wickets in hand.

Calverley captain Ben Waller (76) steered them past Silsden’s 228-8 while Taran Chana (70no) and Rob Winter (55no) took North Leeds to victory over Upper Wharfedale.

Birstall survive as Ossett advance

AN unbroken 162-run partnership between Joe Cook and David Toft steered Wakefield Thornes to an eight-wicket win at Buttershaw St Paul’s in the first round of the Central Yorkshire League competition.

Cook hammered six sixes in an unbeaten 104 and Toft hit 79 not out as Thornes overhauled Buttershaw’s 215 that featured 97 by opener Gary Wainwright.

Openers Fahid Rehman (52) and Richard Foster (37) put on 91 as holders Methley beat Division One Adwalton by seven wickets.

Birstall survived a scare at Crossbank Methodists.

Replying to Crossbank’s 134, Birstall were in trouble at 10-3 before Craig Wood (59), Nick Ksaye (34no) and Eric Austin (24) guided them to a five-wicket win.

Ossett coasted to a nine-wicket victory over Caribbean who were routed for 87 by Gurman Randhawa (5-25) and Tom Chippendale (3-33).

Shoaib Latif finished unbeaten on 43 as Ossett knocked off the runs in just 10.1 overs.

David Blakeley struck an unbeaten 63 as Mirfield Parish Church eased home against Rodley. Alan Sumner (104no) and Paul Marlow (62no) shared an unbroken 147-run stand in Liversedge’s eight-wicket win at Wakefield St Michaels’.

Division One side Great Preston beat Championship East Ardsley thanks to an unbroken third partnership of 161 between Gary Newton (100no) and Stuart Ruddick (56no).

Sykes Cup

Holders humbled in quick fashion

HUDDERSFIELD Premiership leaders Scholes beat holders Hoylandswaine by six wickets in the second round.

Hoylandswaine, who had lifted the trophy for the last two seasons, were bowled out for 143.

Toby Booth (49no), Joe Carter (30) and Peter Drysdale (28) led the way as Scholes knocked off the runs in 29 overs.

Championship side Meltham pulled off an upset by winning at Shepley. Chasing Meltham’s 137, Shepley were routed for 69 by George Sykes-Kenworthy (4-11), despite Danny Glover’s 31 not out.

Marsden lost by seven wickets to Barkisland. Chris Williams bagged 7-18 in a 10-over spell as Marsden were toppled for 136 and Alex Kaye (65no) and Jamie Summerscales (31) led Barkisland’s reply.

Andrew Smith, who hit 16 fours in a sparkling 118, shared an opening stand of 102 with Iqbal Khan (41) and put on 118 for the second wicket with Asif Hussain (70) as Kirkburton piled up 263-5 at Honley who managed only 142 in reply as Khan snapped up 6-32.

Steve Whitwam and Jack Hargreaves struck half-centuries as Premiership strugglers Golcar eased to a five-wicket win against Linthwaite. Shershan Naidoo bagged 5-43 and hit 61 in Shelley’s victory at Broad Oak.

Alex Rowles (51), Brad Birkhead (48) and Jack Pearson (4-17) were Rastrick’s match-winnners as they beat Thurstonland by 101 runs.

Robertshaw earns weekend double

OPENER Mark Robertshaw hit an unbeaten 107 as holders Pudsey St Lawrence defeated Hanging Heaton in a thrilling second-round tie – 24 hours after beating them in the league.

Robertshaw and Adam Waite (79) put on 147 for the first wicket as they overhauled the home side’s score of 252-9. Ian Philliskirk and Nick Connolly both made 71 for Heaton.

Iain Wardlaw took 6-57 as champions Cleckheaton defeated Undercliffe by 14 runs. Gulsheraz Ahmed (66) and Fahim Ashraf (58) helped the losers to 258-9 in reply to Cleckheaton’s 272-8.

Woodlands were the day’s big casualties as they suffered a 36-run defeat against New Farnley. Rishy Limbechaya (59) and Mark Lawson (49) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 101 as their side made 208-8. Woodlands lost early wickets to Lawson 4-28 and even Chris Brice (67) and Grant Soames (41) could not save them.

An opening stand of 159 between Callum Geldart (98) and Nick Lindley (73no) powered Pudsey Congs to a nine-wicket win over Bowling Old Lane. Ahsan Butt made (64) in the Division Two side’s 181.

Spinner Noman Ali (4-15) and Phil Slater (4-41) bowled out Morley for 153 as Bradford & Bingley eased to a 99-run win. James McNichol made 63 for Morley.

Bankfoot’s Cosmond Walters (114no) and former Yorkshire player Neil Nicholson 101, put on 182 for the third wicket as their side made 260-3 in a 71-run win at Keighley.

Lightcliffe defeated Saltaire by 33 runs. While Yeadon pipped Hartshead Moor on run rate in a rain affected match.

Yorkshire Cup

Whatley smashes York to Cup victory

York smashed their way to a nine-wicket win in a high-scoring game at Cleethorpes.

Home captain Henry Warwick hit an unbeaten 127 and put on 122 with Ian Mansfield (67) as Cleethorpes raced to 282-4. But Adam Whatley smashed 113 and put on 163 for the first wicket with Simon Lambert (112). Victory was completed in 35.3 overs with Liam McKendry weighing in with a half century.

Connor Ryan (82) and Jonathan Tattersall (57) put on 133 in Harrogate’s 260 but a gutsy 57 not out from Hull’s Andy Scott helped them tie the go through having conceded one fewer wicket.

Waqar Ahmed (81) top scored in Sheffield United’s 203 as Castleford fell short in a spirited chase. Matthew Morland (46) and Matt Fowler (65) helped Appleby Frodingham to a 21-run win over Driffield Town.

Luke Townsend (98) and Charlie Allen (63) rescued Doncaster Town with a seventh-wicket stand of 140 in their win over Rotherham Town.
