Ramprakash back in contention for England tour squad

England coach Peter Moores will consider Mark Ramprakash's claim to a Test recall at the age of 38.

Surrey batsman Ramprakash, who scored 2,000 county championship runs for the second successive season this year, has not played for his country since 2002.

But amid reports that he may be back in contention to be named on Friday in the squad to travel to Sri Lanka, Moores acknowledged: "Obviously Mark had a great season. He has certainly warranted discussion and will be among a group of others who will be discussed."

Moores also had heartening news of Andrew Flintoff, following the all-rounder's latest bout of surgery on his problem left ankle four days ago.

It is widely anticipated Flintoff will not be able to play again until the start of next summer but Moores was able to confirm successful surgery and an optimistic long-term prognosis for the 29-year-old.

"The operation apparently went very well," he said.

"They found some fragments of bone and are confident he will make a full recovery."

Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard says he hopes Simon Jones will be around to represent them in England colours when the Ashes come to Cardiff in 2009.

England are scheduled to play an Ashes Test at Sophia Gardens in just under two years' time but Jones has been linked with Worcestershire and Hampshire and has yet to commit himself.

Maynard, who played four Tests and 14 one-day internationals for England, said: "We'd love to have a Glamorgan player involved in the Ashes in 2009.

"Most people would probably say our best chance of that is Simon Jones and that will obviously only be if he signs his contract to stay here."

Derbyshire have strengthened their squad for next season with the signings of spinner Nayan Doshi and former Yorkshire batsman John Sadler.

Left-armer Doshi, 29, left Surrey in July before signing a short-term deal with Warwickshire but didn't appear for them because of ECB registration problems.

Sadler, 29, has joined Derbyshire from Leicestershire.
