Rhodes and Fisher show champion form

YORKSHIRE Academy captain Will Rhodes received the Championship trophy from county president Dickie Bird at Weetwood and then smashed an unbeaten century against visitors Harrogate.

The Academy had made certain of the title a week earlier and they finished their league programme with a nine-wicket victory. Rhodes’s 101 contained 12 boundaries after Harrogate were shot out for 134, their last five batsmen failing to score.

Left-arm spinner Karl Carver took 5-32 in 11 overs and seamer Matthew Fisher’s 3-20 off 9.1 overs included a hat-trick.

Runners-up York were six-wicket winners at Barnsley, who collapsed from 38-0 to 39-5 and were bowled out for 117 in 44.3 overs. Nick Kay, who finished with 4-31, took four wickets for one run at one stage.

Ali Asad, Driffield’s overseas opening batsman, had 12 fours and a six in an undefeated 125 but hosts Sheffield Collegiate lost by just two runs in a nerve-wracking finale. Chasing 259-6, Collegiate needed four to win off the last ball, with their last pair at the wicket but could only manage a single.

Batting at No 9, Jarran Cook struck an unbeaten 52 off 20 balls, including five sixes and two fours. Opener Charles Finan top-scored with 77 and Castleford won by 53 runs against Doncaster.

Left-hander James Moorhouse had 15 boundaries in an unbeaten 82 as Rotherham beat Sheffield United by 10 wickets. Mark Cummins made an undefeated 33 against his old club and left-arm seamer Archie Ogden took 5-42 on his return from injury.

Slow right-arm bowler Kieran Lindley claimed 4-9 in four overs in Appleby Frodingham’s win against Scarborough.
