Warner hat-trick puts Academy on title verge

YORKSHIRE Academy, who are poised to win their first league title, hoisted their highest score of the season as visitors Scarborough lost by 329 runs.

Ryan Gibson and captain Will Rhodes had a third-wicket stand of 221, Gibson striking 16 fours and a six in amassing 160 and Rhodes including seven boundaries in his 120 as Academy made 386-5. Five Scarborough batsmen failed to score and Jared Warner took 4-9 in three overs, including a hat-trick.

York, the only team who can catch Academy with two matches remaining, overcame hosts Cleethorpes by 131 runs. York declared on 279-4 after 51 overs, Liam McKendry and Simon Lambert adding 143 for the second wicket. McKendry made 80, younger brother Ryan hit an undefeated 65 and Lambert 61.

Cleethorpes fell for 148 in 54.5 overs, Chris Burn taking 5-25. York trail the Academy by nine points with 16 to play for. Academy visit Cleethorpes on Saturday and have home advantage against Harrogate a week later. York are at home to Sheffield Collegiate on Saturday and then visit Barnsley.

Opening bowler Zohaib Ahmad took 5-40, including 5-14 in his second spell, as Barnsley defeated Castleford by 24 runs. Replying to 185-5, Castleford collapsed from 70 without loss to 161 all out.

Spinner Duncan Heath had 7-22 in 17.5 overs for Appleby Frodingham who won by 48 runs at Doncaster. David Brent top-scored with 80 for the winners.

Chamal Rajapaksha made 73 and had a second-wicket stand of 129 with Bilal Anjam but Sheffield United lost by 46 runs against Harrogate, for whom David Foster took 6-36 in 17 overs.

Sheffield Collegiate were three-wicket winners against visitors Rotherham.
