Yorkshire Post Schools Cricket Challenge
THE sun is shining and a host of budding cricketers are taking to the wickets to book their place at finals day at Headingley this summer.
The Yorkshire Post Schools Cricket Challenge is underway.
The competition has now passed its halfway stage now and the successful teams are approaching the Area Finals.
Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, last year's champions have reached round three and in the same area (Calderdale and Kirklees), Kirkburton Middle School, the 2007 champions, have already reached the Area Final.
Kirkburton beat Castle Hall in the first round by 10 wickets. Matthew Crookes scored 50no and Chris Hallas 26no as they reached 89-0 in reply to Castle Hall's 86-7.
In the second round they lost two wickets, again for 89 to pass Rydale Valley's total of 85-8.
Some players were dominant with both bat and ball. Greg Drewery took 5-7 for Market Weighton in the game against Cottingham in the East Yorkshire Area as they were dismissed for 55 and then scored 35no as his team, won by nine wickets.
In the second round against Hornsea he had another five-wicket haul, this time for 13 runs as Hornsea were all out for 38 in reply to Market Weighton's 81-7.
Nur Zamal took 5-17 for King Ecgbert's, Sheffield, as they beat Handsworth Grange in round one and then scored 61, the highest recorded score so far, in the second round against Fir Vale.
Other five-wicket takers were Cameron Mclean who took 5-9 for Oakwood Technology college as they beat Clifton College (Rotherham) by 10 wickets and Matthew Watson who took 5-10 for Frederick Gough School in the game against Sir John Nelthorpe which his team also won by 10 wickets.
The competition is open to girls and well as boys and Emily Steers who plays for Kingstone School, Barnsley, and for Yorkshire Women's Under 13s team, helped Kingstone to beat Foulstone School, Darfield, by taking 3-3 as Foulstone lost eight wickets for 51 in their 20 overs, a total which Kingstone reached without loss, Josh Abson making 40no.
The most consistent batting of the first two rounds came from Humberston's Ryan Harrison who scored 51no as his side beat Toll Bar by 17 runs in a game reduced to 16 overs because of inclement weather but yet produced a total of 219 runs.
Against South Axholme in the second round he made 52 before being bowled and again the game produced over 200 runs.
South Axholme had an opening partnership of 87 by Tonks and Platt but Humberston reached their total of 100-4 for the loss of only three wickets. Reece Holberry took 3-1 bowling at the death of South Axholme's innings which enabled Humberston to win a hard-fought match.
Perhaps the most remarkable match was played between Holmfirth and Brooksbank in the Calderdale Area. Chasing 102-6, Holmfirth made 106-7 with only one ball to spare.
