Yorkshire v Notts Day four: Gale earns draw despite missing century
ANDREW GALE hit a fine 99 to ensure Yorkshire's Championship encounter with Nottinghamshire finished as a draw at Scarborough.
The left-hander batted magnificently to ensure the White Rose county rallied from 31-2 early on the fourth day to finish on 232-4 when the umpires called a halt at 4.51pm.
Gerard Brophy also hit a half-century to ensure that Yorkshire were able to collect eight points from a game in which Nottinghamshire spent all but the opening day in the ascendancy.
Gale's knock meant Yorkshire recovered from what had been a double early blow in the afternoon when Joe Sayers and Jonathan Bairstow both perished.
First, Sayers was out after just two had been added to the lunchtime score of 115 with the opener edging Ryan Sidebottom to Andre Adams at third slip.
The same combination then accounted for Bairstow to leave Yorkshire struggling on 131-4.
Thankfully for another decent Scarborough crowd, Gale and Gerard Brophy ensured there were no further losses in a session reduced by eight overs due to a rain shower that kept the players off for half-an-hour from 2.10pm.
Further rain at 3.30pm then saw tea taken ten minutes early.
Having lost Jacques Rudolph in the final over of yesterday's play, Yorkshire needed a strong start but it was Nottinghamshire who struck the first blow of the morning.
After surviving in the previous over when Chris Read spilled a chance off Sidebottom, the Yorkshire captain was less fortunate a couple of minutes later when trapped in front of his stumps by Andre Adams.
It was just the start Yorkshire had been desperate to avoid but thanks to Gale and Sayers they had rallied significantly by the lunch interval.
Gale reached his 50 with a powerful six over long on from Patel to receive a deserved ovation, the left-hander having taken 68 balls to chalk up a second half-century in as many Championship matches.
By lunch, Gale had moved on to 58 not out with Sayers unbeaten at the other end on 36 to help Yorkshire to 115-2.
