Yorkshire’s Lizzie Armitstead took a silver medal and Alex Dowsett a bronze in the trade team time-trials in the opening event of the Road Cycling World Championships in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday.

Armitstead’s Boels-Dolmans squad were 6.66 seconds behind as Velocio-Sram claimed victory in the women’s race in 47 minutes 35.72 seconds.

Fellow Briton Dowsett’s Movistar squad finished 30.11secs behind as BMC Racing won a second straight men’s title in the discipline, clocking 42mins 07.97secs.

The riders switch to national team colours now, with the women’s individual time-trial on Tuesday and the men’s on Wednesday, when Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dowsett will go for glory.

Armitstead, also Commonwealth champion, leads the British women’s road race squad on Saturday and has a good chance of success.

The men’s road race takes place on Sunday, September 27, when Britain will be without Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas, but have a team of options who could spring a surprise.
