Back with a bang and best is yet to come

RISING Wakefield show-jumping starlet Nicola Wright has set her sights on a third national title and has plenty of arrows to fire following a stellar 2015.

But success both inside and outside of the ring is important to the talented 16-year-old, who ultimately dreams of being a full-time vet.

Rockwood Harriers Pony Club star Wright secured two national championships as part of a brilliant 2015 on board Galtee Voilete, whose stable name is Holly.

As well as winning the winning the 1m Tacklockers Championships, the Flockton-based teenager enjoyed victory in the Pony Club Championships at Intermediate level with her team, completed by Anna Shaw, Leah Hallas and Amy Watson, winning both the area and national championships.

Following this month’s success at Bishop Burton, Wright’s 2016 has already begun with a bang and the young rider now hopes the best is yet to come.

Success in Bishop Burton’s Pony Club Area Dengie competition in the 1.10m class qualified the youngster for the National Championships at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire, the latest in a long list of events.

Nicola and Holly have also qualified for the finals of the Blue Chip 1.10m Joint RFL Power Championships, the Blue Chip 1m Joshua Jones UK Winter Discovery Championships and the Scope 1m Progressive Championships, as well as the second rounds of the British Novice Championships and Discovery Championships.

It means plenty of ammunition in a bid for a third national title but also a very busy Easter for a young lady whose dreams of competing regularly at HOYS are also accompanied by her professional ambitions.

Wright, who is trained by Peter and Kath Mellor, told The Yorkshire Post: “For the first week of Easter, I am at the Blue Chip National Championships at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire – we set off next Tuesday.

“Then I’m on to Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire for the Dengie Champs so we are away for six days competing.

“It should be fun!

“Then, in the second week, I am taking up a work experience at Churchfield Veterinary practice so there’s not a minute to spare.

“In terms of my ambitions, I would like to win another national championship and qualify for the Horse of the Year Show.

“But my long-term aim is to qualify to be a vet and keep competing horses at a national level.”

The busy teenager currently attends Greenhead College, Huddersfield where she is studying A-level chemistry, biology, maths and business with a view to studying veterinary at Liverpool University.

But there is still just about time for another hobby alongside the show-jumping with the youngster a keen skier and having just returned from a break from the horses and studying in Saalbach and Hinterglemm in Austria with her mum Jan and dad Tim.

“It’s tough studying three extremely demanding subjects and business and training and keeping my horses fit,” admitted Wright.

“But I’m dedicated and homework is often done in the back of the horse-box on the way to and from competitions!”

For the last two years, Bramham has also featured on the agenda for a rider who has competed in the event’s Pony Club team competition.

Competing in the Rockwood Harriers mounted games team at HOYS in 2010 and being nominated to trial for the England mounted games team are other early career highs.

It has given her plenty to ponder when enjoying her other love of skiing on the slopes though this year’s recent trip was made without another of the show-jumper’s big influences, in 21-year-old brother Ben.

He is in his final year at Sheffield Hallam University and Nicola explained: “I’ve been skiing since I was two and Ben, who missed out due to his studies, is also a keen horseman, competing at HOYS and in all the pony club teams for show-jumping, eventing and mounted games.

“Hopefully, I can follow his lead.”
