THE woes increased for Lee Johnson and his stuttering Barnsley side as Walsall condemned them to a fourth straight league defeat for the first time since they slipped out of the Championship.
Debutant loanee George Evans and former Tyke Milan Lalkovic scored in the second half for the high-flying Saddlers.
Barnsley went close as early as the third minute when Sam Winnall played a neat one-two with Simeon Jackson before firing inches wide from 15 yards.
The Saddlers’ leading scorer, Tom Bradshaw, almost broke the deadlock just before the interval when he saw a goal-bound strike deflect off Marc Roberts before fizzing inches wide of the post.
Barnsley had the momentum at the start of the second half, Ben Pearson smashing in a piledriver from 25 yards that deflected wide, but it was against the run of play when the Saddlers scored in the 63rd minute through Evans.
Lewin Nyatanga nodded against the crossbar for Barnsley, but Lalkovic made sure for Walsall when he fired past Townsend.
