Barnsley eased their relegation fears with an Oakwell victory while Doncaster Rovers and Bradford picked up draws in League One.
Danny Wilson’s Reds beat Port Vale 2-1, on-loan Manchester United youngster Ben Pearson firing home the winner.
Visiting goalkeeper Chris Neal scored an own goal, before Colin Daniel netted for Vale.
Filipe Morais notched a late equaliser for Bradford City as they drew 1-1 at Valley Parade against Colchester.
Former Sheffield United striker Chris Porter gave the U’s an early lead, before Jon Stead’s cross was converted by Morais.
Doncaster Rovers let a 2-0 lead slip away at Chesterfield, before drawing 2-2.
Goals from James Coppinger and Andy Butler put Rovers in front, but the Spireites hit back to level via Eoin Doyle and Jimmy Ryan.
In League Two, York City conceded a late penalty, substitute Shaq Coulthirst converting the spotkick, to lose 1-0 at Southend United.
The penalty came after Joe Pigott was felled by Brad Halliday.
York had chances, Luke Summerfield denied by Daniel Bentley, and Russ Penn’s close-range header cleared off the line.
“At the moment the results are not marrying up with the performances unfortunately,” said York boss Russ Wilcox.
“That’s so important whether you’re at the top of the league or down at the bottom.
“It’s very frustrating. I could feel that coming a little bit because we absolutely dominated the first-half but you’ve got to score when the opportunities come.
“If a neutral was watching today I’m sure he’d be saying we were the top team but it’s important we move forward and go again.”
