With just 24 hours to the start of the new football season, Beth Pearson looks how at how Yorkshire’s teams have fared in their opening matches over the past 10 years.

Leading the pack is Championship team Leeds United, who have won seven of their first games of the season in the last 10 years, only losing against Millwall in 2014, Southampton in 2011 and Derby in 2010.

The Whites were consistent and had a seven-year streak of opening-match wins from 2003 until the loss against Derby in 2010.

After head coach Uwe Rosler named defender Sol Bamba captain and signed winger Stuart Dallas ahead of the 2015/16 season, records suggest Leeds should come out on top during their first fixture of the year against Burnley.

Unsurprisingly, after being relegated from the Championship 15 months ago, Barnsley have had the most opening day losses out of Yorkshire’s teams in the past 10 years, with six defeats and only one win, that coming in 2005.

However, after their new signing of goalkeeper Nick Townsend from Championship side Birmingham, among others, the Reds will be looking to win for the first time on the opening day in nine years on Saturday when they visit Chesterfield.

Also at the bottom of the bunch are Huddersfield Town and Hull City – who meet on Saturday at the KC Stadium - who have only recorded nine points each in the past 10 opening games.

In September 2004, Hull got thrashed by Huddersfield who won 4-0 the biggest goal difference between them since 1987, however in their most recent meeting Hull.

The Championship sides face each other on Saturday in their first fixture this season, but who will lose their first game of the season for the fourth consecutive year?

Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United have the most wins after Leeds, however Rotherham trailing the Owls by a point as a result of losing to Derby last year.

Sheffield Wednesday play Bristol City and Rotherham host Milton Keynes on Saturday.

Doncaster Rovers have a very consistent history of draws in their opening matches, with four in the last 10 years.

Rovers were relegated from the Championship to League 1 along with Barnsley on goal difference 15 months ago.

They enter the new campaign with promotion hopes and with new signings in Andy Williams, Richard Chaplow, Gary MacKenzie and Thorsten Stuckmann, hope to hit the ground running against Bury at the Keepmoat Stadium.

With only a point separating the four remaining Yorkshire teams, their history of fast starts is uninspiring.

Both Middlesborough and Bradford City won last year’s opening games even though they are the bottom of the four with 11 and 12 points respectively from their past 10 opening games.

Sheffield United lost in their first game last year and York City drew against Tranmere Rovers, who were eventually relegated from League Two.

Middlesborough’s debut of the 2015-16 campaign in on Sunday when they face Preston, however after the selling of midfielder Lee Tomlin the performance of the team in this first match is unpredictable.

Bradford City face Swindon Town in the first round of the League One fixtures and Bradford have not come out victorious against Swindon since 2005.

Sheffield United will also have to forget their losses as they face Gillingham on Saturday, who they lost 2-0 in February.

Meanwhile in League Two, York City play Wycombe for their first fixture and hope that new defender Eddie Nolan will lead them to victory.
