JIM O’BRIEN is backing new signing Jason Scotland to be a big hit for Barnsley.

The powerhouse frontman endeared himself instantly to Reds supporters with a goal with his first touch after coming on as substitute in Tuesday’s highly-impressive 2-0 home victory over Millwall, which extended David Flitcroft’s side’s unbeaten streak to five games in all competitions.

Recently released by Ipswich Town, the former Trinidad and Tobago international has a point to prove after a tough season with the Tractor Boys, which saw him find the net just twice.

But Ipswich’s loss will prove Barnsley’s gain, according to midweek man-of-the-match O’Brien, who says the Reds head into today’s game at Bloomfield Road full of confidence.

Also in the fray for Barnsley up front is newcomer Chris O’Grady, who is also set to provide healthy competition for Chris Dagnall and Marlon Harewood in the weeks ahead.

O’Brien said: “Jason has added a bit of quality straightaway and he is off to a flyer and, hopefully, he can score a few more.

“I remember playing against him in my first game for Celtic reserves when I was 16; now I am a skinny 25-year-old!

“Him and another lad called Colin Samuel were playing against me and they were just absolute monsters, bullying people on the pitch.

“So I certainly know what Jason is all about and I know he just loves scoring goals. If we can get the supply to him, I am sure he will do that.”

On life under the new broom of Flitcroft, Micky Mellon and Martin Scott, which is inspiring an Oakwell renaissance, he added: “We know how much things mean to David and we see it every day.

“His team talks get us fired up and we know the commitments he is making to the club and his enthusiasm is superb and it is rubbing off on us.

“We are really working hard for him because it means so much for him.

“We just need to kick on and keep going and the three-five-two system we employ is working as not a lot of teams really know how to deal with it. When they do figure it out, hopefully we will have a Plan B!”
